Getting Off the Grid with a Solar Power System
Solar power is being considered by an increasingly large amount of homeowners each year as electricity costs continue to rise. As energy cost caps expire or are removed, those energy costs rise even further. Getting “off the grid” is a goal that many homeowners aspire towards, and the only effective way to become energy independent is to install a solar power system on your house. Depending on the size of the solar power system, where you live, and the amount of electricity that your house uses, you could end up potentially saving tens of thousands of dollars over the next two decades.
Savings are in the Math
The savings are undeniable. The cost of a solar power system is upfront as you install the system and never have to purchase power again. At first, the $20,000 or more that you spend on such a system will be more expensive than several years of electricity. Eventually though, the system will pay itself off, offset by rises in energy costs. Also, a hefty tax credit will provide a large rebate. In this way, home solar power systems effectively cost much less than their price tag because of various energy initiatives that lower the cost of these products. No matter the size of the solar system that you use, it will pay itself off in about ten years or so.
If you produce more electricity than you use, you can actually sell that electricity back to the energy company. For the average household, most solar power systems won’t produce quite enough electricity to make this feasible, especially in the winter months when there is less sunlight (and less electricity is produced as a result). However, the average household could be further renovated to save even more energy and become greener. Newer types of insulation, better windows, and other upgrades can save thousands of dollars a year in energy costs. A home can easily save hundreds of dollars a year simply by replacing incandescent light bulbs with fluorescent ones.
Getting off the energy grid is a multi-pronged goal that is costly at first but well worth it in the long run. In the coming years, it will become even cheaper and more efficient to make homes green. They will not only use less electricity, but more homes will produce their own electricity as well. Combined with other energy initiatives like electric and hydrogen fuel cell cars and improving mass transit systems, America is well on its way to energy independence, and you can start today by renovating your home or business with a solar power system.
